Polar dip in Maine 10/16

For this week'a post, I decided to look for events happening in Maine that involve an Environmental focus or fundraiser. Initially I was thinking that these articles would give us ideas for a fundraiser in our own club--- mainly because we seriously need money!-- but then a certain event caught my attention.

Through Key Club and other community service oppertunities, I always heard about the Polar Dip that happens every year around this time. I know that some of our Deering staff has participated in this event. Little did I know, however, that these events are held and sponsored by Maine environmental programs!

The goal this year is $20,000 to help support the National Resource Council of Maine. This group is helping the community by reducing pollution. I found this article through WLBZ, a news channel in Bangor.

"PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine's largest environmental advocacy organization has begun accepting registrations for its sixth annual cold-water ocean plunge and 5-kilometer run to raise money in the name of climate change."

This event would be an incredible opportunity for Mainers to help support the affects of climate change, and I think it's an incredible opportunity.

  1. I never knew about the polar dip! It sounds like a great attraction even if the participants arent very green.

  2. I've always known about the polar dip, but never would I do it! I don't think I could handle the freezing temperatures of the water! But I definitely respect the people who are sacrificing their warmth for the earth!
