Australian Wildfires 10/30

Building off from my last post, I decided to look into the effects of the rising temperatures. In my English class, my teacher brought this topic up, and when I came across the article, it really drew my attention. This article is from The New York Times and was published October 20.

The article was written about the recent issues of wildfires in Australia, but this case was an extremity of it. It happened in Canberra, Australia, along with various neighboring towns. The wildfires stretched along a 190-mile front. According to the article, it "killed one man, destroyed 208 homes, and damaged 122 others."

The firefighters took down 161 fires in the towns around Sydney once the weather began to calm. The fires were so bad that some towns even considered evacuating. Some of these towns were expected to burn for days. Lately in Australia, wildfires have become extraordinarily intense with hotter than average temps.

I would not be surprised if there will be more stories such as this due to the increase of temperatures around the globe, and I think its crucial that we have more awareness on the issue.

  3. As Colleen said, there are always forest fires happening everywhere - it's scary! I can't even begin to imagine how terrible it must be for the families that are forced to desert their homes.
