Why so cold?
For my blog post, I decided that I wanted to look into why the weather has been so funky, and how the environment is being impacted. One day it could be ten below, and the next forty degrees. That’s the way it seems on the east coast. In one of my earlier blogs I investigated the climate changes. I looked into a role reversal: how the areas that used to be warm are now cold and the cold places are now warm. These phenomenons have fascinated me and appalls forecasters as they try to predict the upcoming weather.
I read a CNN article called “What’s with this weather?” This article is about the cold weathers in Florida and the heat in Alaska, and talks about the sports that have been playing through these crazy storms. “It's so cold in Florida that farmers joke the oranges are squeezing themselves to stay warm.” Although the weather seems extremely alarming, meteorologist Roger Edwards says that it is not uncommon for the weather patterns to flip flop in the winter. He does, however, admit that it has been more persistent.
Hawaii recorded their highest waves at 50 feet in Oahu. The meteorologists explain that there was a hurricane passing through towards the island. It is the storms like this that are record breaking this year. They also explore the water issues in California. The article says that, “Winter is California's wet season. It's the dead of winter now, but there no cloud in sight and nary a raindrop in the forecast. California's facing perhaps its worst drought since record-keeping began a century ago.” And with the abnormally warm weather, there has been an abundance of black bears in Nevada. Northern California is also having a lot of bears this year.
My thoughts:
In my opinion, it is scary to see how this crazy weather is impacting each of the states along the U.S. It is so easy to think that we are being blessed with warmer days, and having to settle with the freezing days, but in reality, it is just setting off the balance of nature. I think that if these heat and freeze spurts are only just really becoming prominent, what will it be like next winter? It is scary to imagine that one or two “winter heat waves” makes that much impact on the animals, plants, and nature.http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/23/us/wacky-weather/
The offset of the weather definitely has been alarming and definitely "funky." But sometimes people take it to lightly and colder states enjoy the warmer weather (I know I do) but we have to remember that the cold happens for a reason and when the normal winter is off, then we should be worried.
ReplyDeleteI've heard a lot of older people talk about how the weather used to be back in their childhood, and that is scary to think about because that means that we can see the effects of our choices in our lifetime.
ReplyDeleteI started doing this topic and then I saw your post! It's been freezing the last couple of days and I thought this topic was interesting because I've heard many people say that global warming can't possible be true if the weather is this cold. However, in an article I read, it said that if we look at the average temperature in 2013 it was one of the highest!
