When asked what will happen to our world if our population continues to grow at the rate we are now, Isaac Asimov, an author, said, “It will be completely destroyed.” I like this quote because it shows how serious this issue is. Although it’s too late to reverse our damage, we can still help lower the consequences. I think this problem has become so serious because there aren’t really any good solutions to overpopulation. However, if we don’t do anything, there will be very dangerous consequences.

Dystopia - Overpopulation
Dystopia is a world where the environment is in a horrible condition because of overpopulation, disasters, or terror. Overpopulation is becoming a major issue today. It is estimated that by 2050, there will be 9.7 billion people on Earth. The difference between that number and the world population today (which is 7.2 billion) is 2.5 billion which is about 200 million more than the entire world population in 1940. There are not enough resources, including food, space, and safe drinking water to support this many people. Even today, we are running out of natural resources. The world is 8,000 miles wide and 24,000 miles in circumference, making space on land an issue as well. People are already being forced into lands that were unpopulated just a few decades ago which are prone to flooding and tsunamis. Global warming will worsen this problem, displacing many people from their homes due to its effects.
I like this topic too, I never really thought about how our overpopulation could lead to the dystopia. Have you ever read the book "Just One"? I have yet to read it but McWilliams recommended it to me. It's about the idea of having just one child, similar to China's policy, in order to reduce our globe's footprint. She had mentioned that it would be a great reading/ reference.
ReplyDeleteThere is a big ethical issue to combating overpopulation, which is whether or not it is right to limit the amount of children people can have. Rather than having one child policies, I think it is more ethical and logical to make contraceptives more available and popular in addition to promoting adoption.
ReplyDeleteComing from the life of the "just one" law I see the difficulty in living under those conditions, as I'm sure everyone else does too. We see these people on TV being famous for have 21 kids and it's crazy and interesting to an extent until you realize how much they have to provide for all those children. That's a lot of resources going to one family. But the Just One child policy would be difficult for a lot of families and that's why it is so controversial. Like what about twins or triplets? I don't know if that'd stop child birth or only increase the amount of children being put into orphanages and on the streets.
