9/29 Introduction to Global Issues

Technology, different cultures, and the media influence our lives and the earth. New technology and media influences allow people to communicate across the globe. Technology also influences many other global issues such as food production and health. Different cultures let nations learn from other nations and develop a better global awareness; this helps us solve global issues more effectively. These global issues such as poverty, the environment, health, and human rights all affect each other.

Quote: “When thinking about sustainability, understanding that our personal choices have global impacts is key.” I chose this quote because I think it is one of the most important things that everyone should understand and will help motivate people to make changes. Most people, including many students and teachers at Deering, don’t think that their personal choices will make any impact. It seems many people use this as an excuse to not doing anything about this major issue, thus society need to understand that their actions do make an impact. Everyone’s actions build up. If everyone made small adjustments to their lives like shutting off lights, recycling, composting, etc, then the earth could completely change.

  1. This goes along with my first post about how people tend to ignore their part in the environment; some people feel that their contribution won't make a difference because they're only one person. I think it's important that we make apparent that everybody's contribution really does many a difference. d

  2. Similar to Molly's ideas, I also agree that people can be ignorant when it comes to their part in the environment. Most people take on the, "bystander" effect by thinking that the next person will make the change that they could do themselves. It is extrememly important that each of us thinks about how we are effecting the environment currently--- negatively or positively--- and come up with ideas on how to improve our habits. Even one little ounce of change for the better will add up in the long-run.

  3. It is understandable that people don't believe in the change they can make because those changes are hard to physically see. I guess this is the tough part of trying to motivate people to become more sustainable: getting people to really believe in the difference that can be made.
